imagining the symbiosis of cities and volcanoes in the future

FUTURE CITY DESIGN (MASTER’S THESIS)

2019

What will our cities look like in 2100?

In the context of increasing energy scarcity, how do we power the cities of the future?

This project is an imagination, an exploration of the symbiosis between the future city and the volcano. Considering the natural geothermal energy, building materials, and fertile soil that volcanoes can provide, perhaps in the future, we will no longer fear volcanoes but embrace them, live with them, and celebrate their every eruption.

PROJECT BACKGROUND

This thesis endeavors to delve into the role of architects in non-architectural /storytelling contexts, leveraging their expertise in solving intricate challenges, fostering creative thought, and employing visual communication. The objective is to narrate a geographical story in the context of climate change.

* The project is presented in an infographic format.

PUBLIC EXHIBITION

For the public final exhibition, I opted to display this expansive infographic on a foldable screen—a versatile piece of furniture accessible to everyone. Consequently, this approach enabled the project to effectively engage a broader audience, spanning from children to seniors, and prompted all to reconsider the true implications of energy scarcity.

TAKE AWAY

This project made me realize the diverse possibilities of an architect’s practice and allowed me to discover the art of storytelling. I believe that powerful narratives are not only memorable but also inspiring. It can evoke emotion and have a long-lasting impact.
